Walks around Pump Cottage

( Return to Pump Cottage home page )

Stanton Moor with the ancient stone circle known as the Nine Ladies is just to the north of Winster. You can walk there directly from Pump Cottage – start by following the path at the end of Woodhouse Lane.

The northern section of the Limestone Way passes just to the south and west of Winster on its way from Matlock to Castleton.

Beautiful Dovedale is only a few miles away to the south of Winster just west of the main road to Ashbourne.

There are 3 old railway lines that have been converted to bridle paths:

-         the Monsal Trail (runs from just east of Bakewell station to Blackwell Mill, a few miles downstream of Buxton on the river Wye),

-         the High Peak Trail (runs from Parsley Hay to Cromford), and

-         the Tissington Trail (runs south from near Crowdecote to just north of Ashbourne).

All are excellent for gentle walks as there are no steep gradients but you do have to watch out for the occasional cyclists. Or you could hire bikes and see more of the countryside - cycle hire is available nearby at Middleton Top near Wirksworth and Parsley Hay.
